Welcome to the Barony of Buissera

A Journey Through Time and Beauty

The Barony of Buissera, a title echoing through the centuries, encompasses the historical and cultural heartland of Bsharri, Lebanon. This website invites you on a journey to discover the rich tapestry of history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty that defines this remarkable region. Nestled high in the mountains, Bsharri (also known by its Crusader name, Buissera) offers a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern life, a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.

A History Steeped in Tradition

Buissera's history stretches back to ancient times. The name itself, Bsharri (بشرّي), derives from the Aramaic phrase meaning "House of Truth." In the 7th century AD, Maronite Christians, fleeing persecution, found refuge in the area's rugged mountains. The town's strategic location and the spiritual significance of the nearby Kadisha Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, solidified its importance as a centre of Maronite Christianity.

During the Crusader era, the town became known as Buissera, and the lordship passed through various hands before ultimately being bestowed upon the Hispano-Genoese Escoto (Scotto) family. Their claim was later recognized by the House of Lusignan, establishing their legacy as Barons of Buissera. Today, this distinguished title is held by Dr. Raquel Parajón y Escoto, Marquise of Parajón and Baroness of Buissera, whose heir apparent is her son, Count Hunor Attila Cseszneky.

The Maronite Legacy

Bsharri's identity is inextricably linked to the Maronite Church. For centuries, this ancient Syriac Catholic Church has been a source of strength and resilience for the community, shaping its cultural identity and preserving its unique liturgical traditions. The town's numerous churches, including the magnificent Saint Saba Cathedral, stand as powerful symbols of this enduring faith.

Indeed, Bsharri is sometimes referred to as the "City of Churches," a testament to the profound religious significance of the region. The Kadisha Valley, with its ancient monasteries carved into the cliffs, further underscores this spiritual heritage, offering a glimpse into centuries of monastic life and devotion. These monasteries, some dating back over a thousand years, provide a tangible link to the past and a living testament to the enduring faith of the Maronite community.

Cultural Gems and Natural Wonders

Beyond its religious significance, Bsharri boasts a rich cultural heritage. The town is renowned for its traditional crafts, reflecting a legacy of artistic skill and ingenuity passed down through generations. The local cuisine, with its unique blend of flavours and ingredients, offers a delightful culinary experience.

Bsharri proudly claims Khalil Gibran as its native son. The Gibran Museum, housed in the former Mar Sarkis Monastery, stands as a testament to his life and work. Originally a 7th-century hermitage, later a Carmelite monastery completed in 1862, the building became Gibran's final resting place thanks to his sister Mariana fulfilling his wish to be buried there.

The museum, established in 1935, showcases an extensive collection of his original paintings, drawings, manuscripts, personal belongings, and furniture from his New York City studio, offering a profound and intimate connection to the literary giant. The museum's expansion in 1975 and 1995 ensures that this significant piece of Lebanese heritage remains accessible to visitors from around the world.

The region's natural beauty is equally captivating. Bsharri is home to the only remaining original Cedars of God (Cedrus libani), a sacred grove that holds immense historical and ecological significance. The Cedars Ski Resort, Lebanon's oldest, provides winter sports enthusiasts with an unforgettable experience.

Moreover, the town is situated near Qurnat as Sawda Mountain, the highest peak in the Levant, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The combination of stunning landscapes, historical sites, and vibrant cultural traditions makes Bsharri a truly unique destination.
